English Entrance : (College/Adult ) : Honorable Mention – Lin Yan
As a Chinese-American, who had not only spent my entire childhood, but also part of my adolescence growing up in China, I have had this great privilege to be immersed in some popular Korean dramas and movies dubbed in Chinese language.
Throughout those golden years of my curious youth, there had always been one fascinating idea that intrigues me to discover this seemingly subtle, yet nevertheless closed-related bound between South Korea and China in regards to both nations’ histories, traditions, religions and values.
This fascination would later on evolve into a profound desire, which constantly motivates me to explore the history and the culture of the Korean nation.
Thanks to Professor Moonsu Han, I have finally gotten this great opportunity to further satisfy my desire.
Writing an essay about Dokdo Island not only gave me a profound understanding about the territorial disputes surrounding the island’s history, but also provided me a better insight about Korean history as a whole.
I have come to realize that the overall history surrounding the founding of the nation, the warring affairs and the sovereignty disputes with other nations are very much similar to the history of China.
This new found revelation has helped me to develop a sentimental attachment to Korean history and culture. Therefore, it has been my greatest honor to be awarded as one of the winners by the essay competition sponsored by Korean Culture, History, and Education Foundation of New England.
Through the ceremonial event I have had the privilege of meeting the most inspiring, charming and motivating people coming from many different parts of the world.
I am truly grateful to all the judges, the committees and other great and prestigious people who have given me this opportunity to participate in such a magnificent event.
Thank you
