English Entrance: (High School ): Honorable Mention- JeongHee Roh
Writing an essay about Dokdo Island was not an easy task. First, I thought that it was a controversial issue so it might have a very complex history that I might not be able to grasp. Then, I also thought that there may be some complications with Japan’s history that it might be harder to find facts about.
As I went on with my research, I actually found it hard to find facts about the island. There were less sources of information than I have imagined. These sources were yet to be scrutinized for reliability. I also did not find many books that focused on it. I even found it harder to gather and combine the bits of information I collected from different sources.
Historically speaking, I realized that Dokdo indeed has a complex one. I was very interested with the fact that after all the researches that I would do, I would somehow be enlightened about a part of my country’s territory. I was lucky and glad that I participated in this essay writing because I felt very much benefited with it. Not only did I know more about Korean history but also of Japan’s and the relationships and events that transpired in the past. I think it somehow made me become a more responsible citizen because I have learned that I need to stand up for my country in terms of territorial disputes.
Generally, I felt grateful that I was able to write this essay because I learned many things about Korean history and people. It made me feel like a Korean who values her country much to know the tiniest bits of information about the tiniest parts of its territory.
